Miscellaneous manuscripts, n.d.

Typescript copy of Act III of James A. Herne's play "Griffith Davenport," a drama set at the time of the American Civil War. There is a prefatory note by Arthur Hobson Quinn and an appendix of notes by Julie A. Herne. "Griffith Davenport" is based on Helen Gardener's novel An unofficial patriot (New York: R. F. Fenno, 1894). The play was first performed on 16 January 1899 but closed on 10 February of the same year. The play was never published, and the only complete manuscript was later lost in a fire. A ms. of Act IV was found in 1926 and published in Quinn's book The early plays of James A. Herne, with Act IV of Griffith Davenport (Princeton, N.J.: Princeton University Press, 1940.), vol VII of the series America's lost plays. Quinn does not indicate when Act III was found.
